all apologies, I have been way out of date updating the live recordings on here for the internet world to enjoy. lest your Athens jazz itch go unscratched for too long, here’s the show from September 27th featuring the Trio Amarillo checkeeetout (the trio starts their set at around an hour and six minutes into the recording):::::[Audio clip: view full post to listen]

last week’s episode with Kenosha Kid will be up ASAP stay tuned! in further news, there’s a great show coming up this Sunday night (10/25) with Baby’s Blue Swing Set featuring Mary Sigalas playing live from 7pm-8pm and an interview with Trey Wright, guitarist for several local jazz groups including Squat and the Trey Wright Trio, during the second hour of the show. after the 25th, I think there will be only three more episodes of Matter of Jazz due to various UGA breaks. You can expect a blues-themed show on November 8th with Craig Waters & the Section from Augusta and also a Christmas-themed episode with the Jake Mowrer Trio/Quartet on what will probably be the final Matter of Jazz of the semester on December 6th.

stay tuned to the blog for the upload of last week’s episode and what to expect from the November 15th show, and stay tuned to the station for Mary Sigalas and Trey Wright this Sunday at 7pm on WUOG 90.5fm Athens and wuog.org/live !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Folk-rock and rock-folk, check it out, folks!

On the next Soviet Block there’ll be some really cool folk-rock, rock with folk instruments and influence, folk songs set to rock, etc. etc., from the likes of ДДТ, Любэ, and more!

I know you can’t wait for the show, so to keep you tied over till Sunday, check out this pretty offensive, yet hilarious song from Есенин, a mystery drama series about one of Russia’s great poets of the 20th century Sergei Esenin! Esenin’s poem is set to music and performed by this actor from the television series.

VOX @ Athica tonight; spooky poems tomorrow

Spooky poetry readings by Ida Stewart, Michael Ford, and Jeff Fallis on Saturday’s Purple Cow! Ida, Michael and Jeff are all graduate students in UGA’s Creative Writing program, and each of them plus other local writers will be reading at A VOX Reading Series Event, Head Lines: News-themed Stories & Poems tonight at Athica from 6:30-8:30.

Ida Stewart’s poems have appeared recently in The Laurel Review, Unsplendid, Country Dog Review, and MAYDAY Magazine, and she has a story forthcoming in Staccato. A West Virginia native, Stewart holds an MFA in creative writing from The Ohio State University. She’s currently pursuing a PhD in creative writing and literature at the University of Georgia, where she’s also co-curator of the VOX Reading Series. The poems comprising her book-in-progress, Gloss, engage with the mountainous Appalachian landscape and the landscape of language—both of which are riddled with twists and turns, ups and downs, tensions, and hidden veins of richness to be mined.

Before moving to Georgia in August, Michael Ford lived for ten years in New Orleans, where he attended the University of New Orleans. He is the author of two books of poems, Carbon (Ugly Duckling, 2006) and Olympia Street (Trembling Pillow, 2008). His recent poems are attempts to make up for all the math classes he skipped in high school. A poem and a blog.

Jeff Fallis’ poems have appeared in The Oxford American, The Iowa Review, Indiana Review, Seneca Review, Quarterly West, Pulse Berlin, the Arkansas Review, the Everyman’s Library anthology Blues Poems and Ploughshares. A poem.

New record by The Clean, “Mister Pop”

Posted by: Will Stephenson

I don’t get many chances to deal with new releases on Blank Generation, given the restrictions that go along with a time-period specific radio show. But this is a brand new record by a band I’ve played a few times on the show, and it deserves highlighting.

The Clean are a New Zealand band from the late seventies—back then associated with Flying Nun Records and the Kiwi rock scene that spawned bands like Tall Dwarfs and The Chills. Mister Pop isn’t much of a departure, which actually sort of comes as a relief. The production is better than their 80s stuff (collected a few years ago on the Anthology comp), but other than that, these seem like the same kinds of subtle, postpunk/power-pop songs they’re known for, focusing more on the relaxed dream-pop side of the group than their angular, punk tendencies but still often organ-driven and undeniably pretty catchy. Two are instrumentals: “Moon Jumper” is based on a long, tense motorik-rhythm and “Simple Fix”—with its toy-percussion and samples of running water—has a really laid-back, Island-y vibe. “Tensile” is a bit of a surprise, boasting vocoder-vocals and a vaguely Eastern synth line. Overall, it’s a great record and fans of 80s alternative pop should really take note.
