Folk Scene

From the early years of American recording to newer neo-folk inspired songs

Doc Watson March 3, 1923- May 29, 2012

Another heartbreak for the folk community hit last Tuesday when legendary musician Arthel Lane “Doc” Watson passed away in Winston-Salem, NC.  He was an exceptional staple of the Folk Scene, and will be surely missed.

While his passing, and that of banjo legend Earl Scruggs (March 6, 2012) signify the end of these legends’ music makin’ on this earth, their influence lives on in the tunes of all those who come pickin’ after.  From the depths of the heart of the Folk Scene, Rest in Peace, boys.

Well folks, my banjo and I are off to the Emerald Isle for the summer, where I hope to hear and make some folky-tunes myself. I appreciate all of those who listened to Folk Scene this semester, and I look forward to returning in the fall for another season of the show. While it’s not American folk, I’d like to leave you with some selections from the Irish folk scene, one of equal talent and heart to that in America. Here yeeare, a bit of somethin old and somethin new:

Earl Scruggs January 6, 1924-March 28, 2012

Last week, the Folk world lost one of it’s greatest legends, Earl Scruggs. Scruggs revolutionized banjo-pickin’ with his 3-finger style of playing, which became standard for bluegrass and much folk music. He developed this style and brought it to its current glory while picking with Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys. He and Lester Flatt continued on by forming the Foggy Mountain Boys, where Scruggs and his banjo truly shone.
Rest in peace, Mr. Scruggs, and thanks a million.

About this time last year, I got a chance to travel to Ireland and listen to some folk tunes, both Irish and American.  Turns out, American folk music is pretty popular amongst some musical crowds over there, and looking at the history of the music, it makes sense.  Many traditional American songs and reels can be found to be rooted back in the Emerald Isle on some level or another, and Ireland is one of the only places in the world (along with the U.S.) which incorporates banjo as a core instrument in its folk scene.  The traditional Irish banjo is the tenor banjo, which has a shorter neck and only four strings.  On this side of the pond, it is often associated with River Boat type minstrelsy.

But that’s neither here nor there, and y’all will have to wait until closer to St. Patty’s day for some Irish lovin’ and fusion tunes from WUOG.  In the mean time, I wanted to share a nice bite of folk that one of my friends sent me.This one fella is also responsible for introducing me to an artist you’ll hear quite often on Folk Scene, William Elliott Whitmore, who has quickly become one of my contemporary favorites.

Now, here y’are, another selection from him, with Mr. Charlie Parr on the 12-string resonator guitar.  Enjoy and sláinte!
