Friendly Folk

One part anti-folk, one part freak folk, one part lo-fi punk

Friendly Folk #17

Feb 27 2010 8:13 pm

Last week was Seize the Airwaves, so there was no friendly folk! We missed y’all so much! To make up for it though, we’ve got some special folky specials!

WUOG interviewed Akron/Family the day before their show at the 40 Watt.

Also, Jason played a special set highlighting MV&EE who is Matt “MV” Valentine and his partner Erika “EE” Elder. The recording starts, already in progress, with The Tower Recordings and progresses through time to the most recent MV&EE work, Barn Nova. The sound is emblematic of the new weird america movement which is a heavy drone/reverb/lo-fi recording style.

Skip ahead 7minutes to hear the beginning of the set, we were off air for a minute. Also, I believe the end of the show cuts off as well. Sorry y’all!

There was a little bit of confusion this week – Nathan and I actually started Deejaying earlier than normal. We forgot to change playlists from the previous deejay, so here’s a link to this week’s playlist. It starts with Sue Jorge.

If you have something special you’d like to hear on next week’s show, send us an email at friendlyfolk at wuog dot org.

We’re looking forward to bringing you more unique contemporary folk music next week, so stay tuned.

Nate and Jason play the best in contemporary folk music. This week Jeffery Lewis talks about LSD, Animal Collective has a purple bottle, and Akron / Family is looking for space in this realm.

If you have any request, give us a comment right’ere.

Friendly Folk #10!!! Last show of this semester!

This is an extra special show for several reasons.

1. It’s the 10th installment of friendly folk!

2. It is the last show of this semster

3. It is NOT the last show, we were renewed for next semester!

4. This episode introduces our brand new friendly folk co-host, Jason Davis! Well not really but I think he said something at one point. Anyway he will bring a lot of great new elements to the show and maybe he can help spruce up the online aspect of the show seeing as I’m not much of a blogger.

5. I worked really hard on it and tried to give credit to all the great recurring artists of this semester.

in case you’ve never taken the time to really look into those some of those greats I’ve provided a few links below:

http://www.myspace.com/paulbaribeau

http://www.myspace.com/jefflewisband

those are just a few, but there are so many more. Just listen for now though:

Friendly Folk: Episode 9!!!!!

This was a fun episode: freak folk block, followed by some folky folk punk block, followed by anti-folk block, then a few new releases, then some punky folk punk, some classic acoustic composers, then a nice mix to tie it all together. Leave a comment, give me some feedback.

This will be the last show until after Thanksgiving break, so get (re?)acquainted with some of the older episodes below. For now though here’s today’s episode:
