January 19: first show of the semester
It’s a new year, it’s a new semester, so I figure it’s as good an opportunity as any to start new on the old Gates of Delirium blog. Hopefully everyone’s been listening every Wednesday night 10-12, because currently I don’t plan to go back and post last year’s podcasts. Tonight’s show features progressive artists from around the world (read: Europe and Asia), and–with a few exceptions–most of tonight’s music comes from the early ’70s. There are a couple of artists from the Canterbury Scene, Egg and Kevin Ayers. You may recognize Ayers from the seminal group Soft Machine (a favorite of the show), which came out at around the same time and in around the same place as other Canterbury bands like Egg, Hatfield and North, and National Health–the members of which all tend to blend together.
Representing Italy is Picchio Dal Pozzo (one of the few Progressivo Italiano bands influenced by the Canterbury Scene). Moving east, Illés hails from Hungary, Drugi Nacin from Yugoslavia (great heavy prog, featuring–of all things–extensive use of the jazz flute), Breakout from Poland, and Martin Kratochvíl’s Jazz Q from the Czech Republic. From Munich, Embryo is one of the most underrepresented Krautrock groups I’ve come across. France’s Philippe Besombes has achieved cult status as of late (see Pitchfork’s review of the 2004 reissue of his 1975 album Libra). My favorite selection of tonight’s show comes from South Korea, of all places: the hard-to-track-down brotherly trio San Ul Lim (”That Mountain Echo”).
Before I go, I’d like to publicly acknowledge one of my callers tonight. Though I did not get his name, 51-year-old Alabama native was truly a joy. An avid music lover, he can describe in great detail the guillotine stage set at the Alice Cooper concert, or partying with Def Leppard and their “girlfriends”.
