Many thanks to UGA professor Kai Riedl for alerting me to the awesomeness that is his nonprofit music production project, Javasounds, featured on today’s show.  Javasounds is a nonprofit organization based here in Athens that creates authentic recordings of Indonesian music.  I suggest you check out their website, javasounds.org, if you liked what you heard on today’s show!

Indian classical music

In honor of the amazing sitar performance by none other than Shujaat Husain Khan at the School of Music last Sunday, I devoted this week’s GW to Indian classical music.

Rai

Today’s show was devoted to rai with a few more traditional Arabian tracks as well.  Rai literally means “opinion,” and since the 1930’s has been an important genre in Algerian music.  It evolved initially from Bedouin music but has gradually taken on aspects of rock and pop as well.  Singers of rai music are called “cheb” or “cheba” for a female singer, as opposed to “cheikh,” the name for a singer of more traditional Arabian music.  Rai is often political or provides social commentary, and the genre features many prominent female singers.

Southeast Asian GW in honor of the monsoons

Sep 17 2009 5:39 pm

Today I loosely based the show around the music of various countries in Asia (minus a brief rai interlude).  Japanese, Indian, Iranian, as well as some indigenous Burmese flute music.  I tried my best to make it fit with the insane amounts of rain that were drowning Athens today.

here’s the first officially streamed Global Warming!  Hooray!  If you like, the playlist for this show can be found here.  Next week I’ll be playing with Geisterkatzen for Noise in the Lobby, so the old host of this show, Nicki, will be back for a little international reunion of sorts.  After that … well … tune in Thursdays to find out!
