In a freak combination of events, today’s guests and I were able to link up and do a Q&A.  These gents are two friends, and fellow DJs from WUOG 90.5fm, the student radio station here at UGA.

Akeeme, more well known as DJ BlacqueStarr, is the host of the Halftime Hip-Hop Show.  It airs Fridays from 9pm to Midnight, and covers the underground reach of the urban music world.  He’s been at the helm of the show for 6 years now, and his creative regime has brought the station (and the Classic City) a wealth of hungry new artists—some of whom have collaborated and jammed on the Triple H S, as it’s called.  He’ll talk about the prior hosts of the show, and his mission with the program, its’ features, the international syndication deal it has, and what hip-hop means to him as both a music form and a culture.  Also, he’s taken the show on the road to successful events in Athens and beyond.  He’s also a DJ for hire, and a double major in Psychology and (what else?) Music.

F. Stanley Julien (or Fabrice for short)  is the host of Spectrum, a full circle news program on WUOG.  Politics of the day, music reviews, movie analysis soundbites and the other goings-on in the world were the focus of the monumental series.  It ran from 8-10pm on Saturdays at the station, and gathered a devoted following.  Spectrum is making a long awaited return to the airwaves this Fall, and Fabrice goes into the details.

Fabrice and Spectrum took a sabbatical from WUOG at a certain point in time, and this is one of many things that Mr. Julien has in common with Mr. Martin.  Both are remarkable examples of the high quality program here at 90.5, though they incredible momentum required a break period from their respective hosts.  Why?  You’ll find out here, and learn about the passion of your unique visions, and why a rest can be needed for to preserve whatever visions or ideas you “move and shake” with.

I’ve worked with these two gents quite frequently in my tenure with the station, and the natural ease we have with each other shows as we fly from topic to topic.  Poetry (both have done their share, particularly Fabrice with a series of projects), hip-hop flashbacks (the dearly missed Rap City show), our experiences in the world of college radio, friendly pop shots fired in at the characters of the entertainment biz—-you’ll get this and more.

While no bloodletting is gone for in the sparse diatribes you’ll hear, no punches are pulled either.

They’ve put a lot of work in, and the chatter goes well into it, so some of their collaborations and insight will be withheld by this writer for the sake of good suspense.

Two busy and distinguished gentleman are Fabrice and Akeeme, but generous enough to share their views and advice, and the steps they took which led them to be part of The Movers and Shakers Project.

(Note 1: F. Stanley/Fabrice has a spoken word poetry album currently out—his 4th one to date—and a link will be posted shortly)

(Note 2: They are kind enough to mention the radio show I did at WUOG, Beasts From the East/Touyou Kanon 東洋神音.  Not needed, but I’m grateful for the shout-out.  Shoutouts to Jamie Diamond, Miranda Lee, Koty Brown, Lina Wood, and the family of folks who contributed to our 2-year run at 90.5fm.  I will be helming a podcast version of the show very soon, and Jamie and Koty will be continuing the format at WUOG in the fall, the Awesome Diety Power Level Music of Japan!)

(Note 3: If you’re not in the Athens, Georgia vicinity to turn your dial to 90.5fm, you can access WUOG via the streaming link which is www.wuog.org/live)

On this day to celebrate the ones that brought us into this world, the Urban Music Institution wanted to open up the doors to show our love and appreciation for all the mothers out there. But, we also needed to fulfill our weekly obligation of giving you, the listeners, your aural fix since we haven’t done a regular show in quite a while. So, we had to bring out the big guns by doing an hour long edition of Diamonds in the Rough featuring tracks from Panic Mane (TNDV3 is available now), Jamie Charoen, Alyxx Dione, Krystale & Kaytradamus, P.H.S., David Lyttle, Dell G., and more, a Halftime Hip Hop Mixtape dedicated to the MCA of the Beastie Boys courtesy of Z-Trip (you can download DJ M-Rock’s tribute mix here), and Tasia Skai wanting to hang on to the #1 slot on the Starting Line-Up Countdown with all the new entries that infiltrated the top 10. So, with graduation and Mother’s Day ‘12 in the books, the question you all may want to ask is what’s next for us? Well, do not fret, we will be going strong all summer long and officially kicking off the summer semester with a Graffiti Session featuring a brand new artist making his official debut to the Classic City. We will be back at our regular day and time, but hit the play button below to satisfy your appetite til we return in a matter of a few days. Shouts-out to all the graduates and of course all the Mothers out there. One Love!!

On the eve of May 4th where the Classic City was celebrating the release of a certain Rugrat-mascot’s album as well as hearing the unfortunate news of one-third of a hip hop triumvirate passing away after a hard-fought battle with cancer, the Urban Music Institution concluded Spring Semester 2012 by bringing the sixth installment of The Collision Course. This iteration of our melting-pot concert series featured a couple of debuts with NY-upstart/UBC Familia Dell G and Charlotte NC guitar/cello tandem, Flesh & Stone, C.C. staples in Mic-Audio and Clean Break, new jacks to the familia with major things jumping off in Jamie Charoen coming back from her trip to NY, .dotGATSBY debuting the Gainesville-bred collective P.H.S., Skinny-C getting ready to drop a new project with familia Nobody Famous but dropping “bands” in the process, and Dante Hawthorne back from his international trek and gearing up to take listeners on a trip to Forrest Ave., and giving the official and proper send-off to a band that really knew how to bring the groove to the ears and feet, Groove Tangent (Be on the lookout for Funky Co-Sign, the Groove Tangent Tribute Band). Obviously, there was a lot more that went down such as a “Milli”, mash-ups, Craig’s List, and then some, so you know what to do.

Plus, as a bonus, we followed C.C.V.I. and the Series Finale of Beasts from the East by having the kids from Project Generation D invade our airwaves, showcasing their skills and tell their stories of how PGD made a major impact musically and personally. To those that may not know, PGD is an after-school program for pre-teens and teens that teaches them the fundamentals of music production, video production and graphic design. PGD has always had a mutual connection with the HHHS because it was at the inaugural Collision Course where Nobody Famous made the announcement he was going to start up an organization for the kids and fast forward a few months later, PGD was born and has flourished since then. With a number of after-school programs getting cut due to lack of funding and/or participation, the future generation should have an outlet to express themselves and gain knowledge along the way and PGD is definitely one of those great outlets and you’ll hear the kids of PGD speak on it for themselves.

We shall we return with a XL edition of the show this coming Friday, and do not worry, we’ll be on the air all summer long yet plotting and scheming in the dark some projects that will be coming to the light sooner rather than later. And once it all comes out, it’s guaranteed to be ILL and that’s word to the Beastie Boys. One Love!!

One night removed from the start of a new chapter with The Four Seasons Concert Series, three unique individuals set foot in the Urban Institution to formally and aurally announce the beginning of their own respective chapters. First things first, after taking a lengthy poetic sabbatical,  Fabr…we mean F. Stanley Julien officially re-emerged delivering poetic justice in the form of an hour long live poetic soul set that featured a “Spectrum” of his works from his first album, all the way to his most recent project which you can check out here. And speaking of “Spectrum,” there was an official announcement regarding the show that Mr. Julien himself was birthed from the HHHS. Elsewhere, one of the HHHS originals Profound Breadth came through to exclusively debut/perform some of his newest material that will be available early this summer as well as speak on the new direction he’s taken with his music when linking with fellow HHHS familia, Nobody Famous, as well as other ramblings that just naturally came out. Haha. And last but certainly not least, we had the distinct honor and pleasure (and revealing the surprise we’ve been teasing for weeks) of having 18-year old singer/songwriter, certified Diamonds in the Rough artist, and all around sweetheart Jamie Charoen (pronounced like Sharon) straight outta Orlando debuting on the WU, and she touched on everything from “awkward turtles,” puppets, and Marvin’s Room and that was just in the first 15 minutes of the interview. The rest? You just gotta tune in for yourself. Jamie C. will return next week along with a plethora of artist all coming together for our sixth iteration of The Collision Course with a special start time of 6PM. And we shall see you then. Have a beautiful Twilight weekend everyone. One Love!!

Organix vs. Feminology

What looks to be a clash between herbal essences vs. feminenergy, it’s actually just a matter of choice yet the two share common similarities such as some women prefer to use Herbal Essences for their hair, and some give herbal essences the codename “Mary Jane” which last time we checked, was a woman’s name. But if you want to bypass all that, here’s what we got on top this go ’round. First off, after a unexpected turn of events, this week’s show came into your radio and interwebs featuring a mini-new edition of Diamonds in the Rough featuring Alyxx Dione, The Born Genius, and Sha-King, as well as premiere from Kontraband Muzik. Also, “the Moscow Firestarter” Tasia Skai pushing to stay on top of the throne on The Starting Line-Up Countdown as well as lil somethin somethin for those that wanted to celebrate the organics coming from the Earth.

And in talking about The B.G. (not to be confused with Baby Gangsta), she along with four other talented ladies came together to bring the Institution its fourth installment of Feminenergy. The five-star line-up of Ricky Simone, Kyshona Armstrong, Nancy Kaye, The Born Genius, and Fae Grimalkin each brought their own natural essence and flavor of femienergy to the WU and the end result was aurally organic brew of a sustenance that you can just taste and feel that will shake you to your very core.

April is halfway through, and we are nowhere near slowing down. For this upcoming week, the wait is over because of two words…FOUR SEASONS!! That’s right, 10 acts will come together to kick off our series of concerts for each season of this calendar year. Spring is officially in the air here in the Classic City, and the HHHS is gunning to put that exclamation point by bringing you a concert that we hope that you will enjoy and brag to your friends that ended up missing out. Plus, we return on Friday with a 3-the-hard-way edition of The Graffiti Sessions featuring 2 familiar faces and 1 new jack (or should we say jackette). Have to tune in and find out. Til then….One Love!!

On an unseasonably chilly but beautiful night in the Classic City, the WU was very much taking over the city both downtown and on the airwaves. Straight up “Parental Control” all evening with DJs tag-teaming with the ones that brought them into this world (and some times threaten to take them out) to make it an authentic family affair. Meanwhile, Cine was jumpin’ jumpin as the WU presented is annual Prom featuring The Humms, Tumbleweed Stampede, and Eureka California with a Wes Craven Anderson theme. Now, you may ask, what does all that have to do with this week’s show? Well, long story short, it’s a “lite” edition this ‘go round in serving but still maintains the same quality or non-duplicated authenticity of urban aural sustenance. It’s a officially Prom season so we brought in some jams that’s guaranteed to crank up any function (some that was actually played at our Prom as well) but there was a guaranteed new #1 on the Starting Line-Up Countdown. And last but not least, we managed to sneak in an exclusive premiere from HHHS Familia, Profound Breadth teaming up with fellow familia Nobody Famous. So while the kids are out and about searching for that “golden egg” while rocking their latest Easter outfit, enjoy this week’s consolidated show and we’ll be back with a full serving with Feminenergy 4. One Love!!

While the country was out and about hoping and wishing that they would be the chosen one to be the recipient of over a half billion in riches, we spread the wealth of urban musical sustenance to the ears and Hearts across the globe without one needing to purchase any kind of ticket. This week featured premieres from AZ, Snow Tha Product, Tenille, and Slum Village, a new edition of Diamonds in the Rough featuring Diego Daze, Scotty, QuEST, Mr. Complex, Y.O., Jane Deezy, and Skinny-C, a tribute to a West Coast Legend, .dotGATSBY looking for #1 and Hall of Fame status on The Starting Line-Up Countdown, and a nice old-school mix that will have you shaking what your momma gave you wherever you may be. Also, it’s Seizer’s Palace (Seize the Airwaves) throughout the weekend and be sure to tune in during Beasts from the East with DITR-certified artist Nneka coming through the WU to talk about her recent released project and ongoing tour which has a stop in ATL this weekend, as well as all the other individuals that have invaded our WUOG airwaves all for a good cause. And lastly, on a bit of a serious note, we want to dedicate this week’s show to the life and legacy of Mr. Wilbur Herrington who was/is/forever and a day will be the true O.G. of WUOG as he was the one that started up this very station almost 40 years ago, and served as our station engineer up until 2011. Without you, there would be no WUOG, and definitely no HHHS. You may have left this very Earth, but all of your hard work and dedication to this station will always be admire, respected, and never forgotten. Rest in Love my friend!! Life is always a blessing, never a curse, embrace it always…remember that everyone. Til the next go ’round, One Love!!

Nu World Order Vol. 5

Posted by: hhhs
Mar 25 2012 2:21 pm

We have officially crossed the midway point of the semester as of this past week and though we have had some great guests and performances from the likes of The Breaks, Eugene Willis Jr., and Groove Tangent as well as The Corner, we’ve now kicked it into high gear starting things off with our fifth installment of our Nu World Order series. To those that are new to the Institution, Nu World Order is where feature live performances from artists that are making their official Athens/WUOG debut. This go ’round we put the spotlight on smooth jazz saxophonist, Dante’ Hawthorne who really let the music speak for himself, TClarence and Fune’ of the 4-man collective Dilligaf (Does it look like I give a “FORK”) dropping their own solo sets and brought HHHS familia, Suni Solomon to boot. Plus, we had N.W.O. alumni Free Tomorrow and Skinny-C swing by for bonus performances and talk about their upcoming endeavors. And last but not least, .dotGATSBY has been journeying to reach even closer to Hall of Fame status on The Starting Line Up Countdown but will some new entries put a roadblock on that move? Just gotta hit play and find out. (Disclaimer: technical issues had the first minute or two distorted but will be fine for the rest of the show)

While some headed out to the Lone-star State for SXSW, others went back to their hometowns ’cause the dorms were closed, and the select handful of people that stayed in town and got a chance to catch even a glimpse of that new Clint Eastwood movie featuring that one member from ‘NSYNC, we kept our doors open to bring listeners a XL Edition of the show featuring an extended edition of Diamonds in the Rough with the likes of Psittacines, Tenille, One Love Beats, Gross Prophet, and Trailblaza, an inspiring interview with Wayne of Just Truth Ministries, .dotGATSBY going for 3 on The Starting Line Up Countdown, a tribute mix to Nate Dogg courtesy of DJ M-ROCK, and a lil somethin somethin to get your groove on for the last little bit of celebration of Spring Break and St. Patty’s Day.
