While Downtown Athens was a buzz for this year’s Twilight Criterium, we were approaching the Twilight end of Spring Semester 2013 and the momentum was nowhere near slowing down. The sixth installment of Feminenergy definitely did not disappoint by featuring new faces (Aviva & the Flying Penguins, Ali Doodle, Niki Suber, and Tashia), Feminenergy vets (Kyshona Armstrong featuring Ansley Schwartz) as well as faces that haven’t graced the airwaves in almost two years (Lesley G. & Suni Solomon). We even managed to sneak in a couple of new premieres from Hannah Washington and Leerone and some fem favorites Snow Tha Product, Lyric Jones, and Rapsody. Clocking at about 4 hours worth of content with 110% pure feminenergy waiting for your ears, and you will NOT be disappointed.

And a special bonus, the season finale of Soft Scaley Underbelly featuring a playlist that would make a certain alma mater feel all types of nostalgic seeing as the 10-year reunion is coming up pretty quick. So, 5 hours worth of content in total to get you through this last week of classes before finals.

Halfway into the month of April, and it had to be a rainy night. That really deter anyone from having a choice of events to check out ranging from Relaying for Cancer, wreckin $#!+ at a rival school, or having a freestyle battle with a Shiloh book on the line. Inside the walls of the WU, rain wasn’t a factor because we brought that thunder in the form of premieres from Boomfox, Big K.R.I.T., Rhymefest, Talib Kweli, Hannah Washington, and De La Soul, new Diamonds in the Rough featuring Wino Willy x sbCNCS, Izzy Guerra, DeLorean, The MyNORS, and J57, Panic Mane looking to etch his name into the book of Hall of Fame status, and a special tribute to a major and jazzy figure in hip hop (and a special day for A NUMBER of people) By all means, heat up that bit of soup, and wrapped yourself up quite nicely and enjoy the vibes. Next up is Feminenergy 6 with C.C.VIII following not that far behind.

With over 20 years under his belt and millions of records sold as one-half of an iconic duo in not just hip hop, but music period, Antwan Andre Patton a.k.a. Sir Luscious Left Foot a.k.a. Daddy Fat Sax, or simply Big Boi checked into the WU as he, along with fellow ATLien from Adamsville, Killer Mike, gears up for the kick-off of the Shoes for Running 2013 World Tour here in the Classic City with close to 50 stops along the trek. Touching on everything from expectations on the tour and how he would personally celebrate the 20-year anniversary of southernplaylisticadillacmuzik in 2014, there’s a good bit of history and knowledge that is worth checking out. A certified and undisputed legend who has no intentions of slowing down anytime soon, Big Boi let’s it be known that it’s still and always will be Dungeon Family Forever and quick to tell those that continue to spread vicious lies and dangerous rumors “BOY STOP!!”

It finally feels like Spring around the Classic City this weekend; however, it’s also feeling like a Gameday due to the upcoming/history-making concert taking place across the way at the stadium and the crazy parking situation. Whatever end of the spectrum that you may fall in that department, it was just another day in the office for WUOG’s Urban Music Institution. Plus, we’re getting you ready for our Four Seasons II next week. All that and then some. You know what to do. Play is waiting for you.

The cliche goes that April showers bring May flowers right? Well, though it rained the day before and cleared up by Friday, we defintely brought that Thunder this week with premieres from Yasiin Bey & Mannie Fresh and Hannah Washington, another fresh installment of Diamonds in the Rough featuring Young Shoujo & Murk Daddy Flex, The Decoders, Absynthe, Chico Mann, Joanna Borromeo, Boombox Saints, JusThoughtZ, C Plus, and Milyssa Rose, Panic Mane looking for the trifecta on The Starting Line Up Countdown, and had the distinct pleasure of having AddiaMuziq & Kiev checking in for the first time to talk about their movement to bring authentic and soulful R&B back into the scene, slow dancing, serenades, emotions and all. It’s the perfect soundtrack as we gear up for a very busy and exciting month of April here in the Classic City and on the WU/HHHS. Enjoy!!

After getting a nice dose of Spring-like weather last week, Winter decided to show its face once again, but brought our own heat as we presented our seventh installment of our Nu World Order series where artists would be making their official WUOG/HHHS/Athens debut. For this iteration, five acts made their way through the doors of the Urban Music Institution to add their names to the growing list of people we’ve had the pleasure of bringing into the HHHS familia. N.W.O. V7 featured Yoeshi Roberts, Vintage Nation, subCNCS [subCONSCIOUS], The IZM, and Panic Mane with T-NUTZ. Each artist traveled on their own unique path and got the opportunity to tell their story through the music. Plus, we also dropped a new track from Hannah Washington, and a bonus performance from Philadelphia’s own Norweigan Arms that took place earlier in the week. In total, you’re looking at about 4 hours worth of content. It’s scheduled to rain this weekend, so be sure to bundle up with some blankets and comfort food and we’ll be sure to take care of your ears’ appetite for solid aural sustenance.

After having to endure rainy days, chilly days, and even snowy days up north, the temperature has risen and the sun is out (even longer due to the time change last weekend), Spring is definitely in the air!! Though the city of Athens has been on Spring Break for the past week, the HHHS had its doors wide open for extended hours to bring the masses a special 5-hour aural session that featured a block harking back to the days of the original musical college party down south a.k.a. Freaknik, an extended Diamonds in the Rough featuring Charley Moon, ANTHM, Tinashe, Sanya G., Jarell Perry, Raven Sorvino, Milyssa Rose, Devine Carma, Anushka, Okapii, Kissi B., and Lady, new music from Ghostface Killah & Adrian Younge and Kat Dahlia, and a new #1 on The Starting Line Up Countdown. Whether you went to TX, NY, FL, or stayed in GA, we got an aural spread that will undoubtedly your ears’ sweet tooth, so bon appetit!!

After 14 years on the air (the HHHS has officially been on the air since Fall 1999 after doing some recent research), March 1st 2013 marked the first time the WU’s Urban Music Institution being broadcast in ATL, specifically at Under the Couch inside the Student Center of Georgia Tech as Dark Knight Entertainment and the HHHS came together for the 1st ever Halftime Hip Hop Concert (in ATL that is haha). And though technically Tech is our in-state rivals, there was nothing but love in the building as the familia Mic-Audio, Profound Breadth, Hannah Washington, and Prohaize came through with purpose of simply to wreck some $#!+ along with some newcomers RamZes Apollo, subCONSCIOUS, and Jay Thrilla sprinkled in throughout the show where we talked about everything some shoes, egg rolls, waffle house, and thug life, and much more. Also, we’re sure folks are wanting to know if Young $crilla continued his reign at the top spot this week, but no worries The Starting Line-Up Countdown was in full effect as well. All is ready for your listening pleasure. Major thanks and shout-outs to everyone that battled the insanely cold weather to come through and rock with us. We enjoyed ourselves and hopefully the HHHS will be back to rock the A again sooner rather than later. Back in the Classic City next week!! See you then!!
