For the final Friday of February, we dropped some new heat from Snow Tha Product, Big K.R.I.T., Nobody Famous, The KnuX, J. Pinder, and Gorillaz, another extended edition of Diamonds in the Rough that featured Wayne JTM, Tasia Skai, Nneka, Speech Debelle, Sarah White, Esperanza Spalding, Ant Da Ripper, and more, CMFTBLVN inching one step closer to be placed in the HHHS: Halftime Hip Hop Show Hall of Fame for the 1st time ever, and so much more that you really just gotta hear for yourself. (We can’t give away everything that we play, but you can always follow along on our playlist). Funny how time flies when you’re having fun because we’re already at the halfway mark for this semester, and we still have A LOT on the horizon. It’ll be March Madness indeed come next week with our next installment of The Graffiti Sessions and Nu World Order taking place respectively and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. As always, stay tuned…One Love!!

Granted Valentine’s Day was earlier this week, but it’s never too late to spread the love or show love to those that really aren’t fans of love. Either way, we got a little bit of something for everybody. This week, we got premieres from DJ Shadow, Raphael Saadiq, and Killer Mike, extended edition of Diamonds in the Rough featuring Raven Sorvino, Scolla, Devine Carama, Skinny-C, Tree, Areta Chilton, and more, CMFTBLVN pushing closer to Hall of Fame status on the countdown, and the 1st Halftime Hip Hop Mixtape of the new year done by DJ M-ROCK which you can download in its entirety here. So whether you are dangerously in love, totally out of love, or just have a love of good music, whatever tickles your fancy, we got you covered. One Love!!

The Corner

On a night where the world of urban music celebrated the life and legacy of one James Yancey better known as Jay Dee or J Dilla or even Your Favorite Producer’s Favorite Producer, the WU’s Urban Music Institution had an event where poets/spoken word artists/musicans and even mentalists all converged on “The Corner” to showcase their naturally-given and developed verbal (and mental) abilities in front of a live audience in our lobby as well as the audience listening across the globe. Throughout the 3 hours, F. Stanley Julien was the guide of formally introducing some of the Classic City’s well-known as well as upcoming poets. But in addition to lyrical confessions of the Heart, we had the distinct honor and pleasure of having the Kalimbaman himself Kevin Spears serenade the ears with his signature instrument “the kalimba” as well as mentalist/psychological illusionist Nick Compise coming through exhibiting his mental talents. Everything else, you would have to just press play and enjoy with the guarantee of not being disappointed right here on “The Corner.”

It’s officially February, and it marks the beginning of Black History Month, and it also marks the beginning one of the most jam packed semesters that we’ve ever had, but we are not complaining because we were built for this and live for this each and every day for each and every one of you. What better way to kick it off with the first Graffiti Session of the new year featuring Groove Tangent with an hour long performance as well as the group members talk about their (ideal) Valentine’s Day plans and gigs that had people “testifying.” If you dig them, be sure to check them out here as they will be continuing to make moves in the Classic City and perhaps beyond soon. Who knows, you may see them back at the WU sooner rather than later. *hint hint.* Plus, another new edition of Diamonds in the Rough featuring Trailblaza, King I Divine & ScienZe, Tahmell, Tone Beatz, Scolla, Skewby, and Aleon Craft, and CMFTBLVN looking for the trifecta on this week’s countdown. Another freshly-packed 3-hour show for your enjoyment and by the looks of what’s on the horizon, it’s only the beginning…THE CORNER hits the WU Next Week!!

For the last show of the first month of the year, we dropped some new tribute heat from Senor Kaos & DJ Jazzy Jeff followed by a mini-Run DMC tribute in celebration of Jam Master Jay’s born day, as well as another installment of Diamonds in the Rough featuring Columbia Nights, Action Bronson & Statik Selektah, Boog Brown, Bill Ortiz, Kooley High, and Fokis, more shake-ups on The Starting Line Up Countdown, and had the pleasure of having Oscar Award-winning filmmaker Ron Elliot of Little Feet Productions to spit his knowledge about his cinematographic experiences from both music and movies and words of wisdom for the aspiring individuals that want to pick up a camera and go for it right on time for this year’s Campus Moviefest and Academy Awards. All that and then some once you hit play. Say goodbye to January ‘12 because that was only the calm before the storm of things on the horizon. One Love!!

2012

We are standing at the end of another year with a new one on the come up. Since taking the reins of the HHHS in 2006, each subsequent year has had its own significance yet also made the show reach stellar and unthinkable heights week-in and week-out. But looking back at this year right here, 2011, it can be said with all confidence that this one holds so much significance more than ever. How you may ask? Well, first off, you have the Top 50 artists that really made an impact on the HHHS this year ranging from the O.G.s (Trav Williams & Richelle L. Brown) to the new jacks (Scotty ATL & Kendra Morris). But besides that, we have had over 50 guests come through the halls of the WU’s Urban Music Institution either to perform, promote, or just hang out. In this year alone we’ve had the pleasure of rocking with: J.Y. Stay Flyy, K. Sam, The Lunch Break, Lima Bean, Lesley G., KaZual, Four Eyes, Regarding Sunshine, Fae Grimalkin, Free Tomorrow, Giovonni Pratt, Ruby Kendrick, Star Slinger, Shlomo, Shigeto, Ignite Athens, RATCHET KILLS, Lera Lynn, Tia P, .dotGATSBY, Dr. Reckless, Sean Teezy, Molly B., Johnson Boy, Charlie Dee, Just Borne Mega Entertainment Agency, Scotty ATL, iNDEED, DJ Burn One, The Nasty, SHOWTIME!!, Jessi Teich & the Uptown Underground, Old God Shearing, Street Violence, Lucy Dreams, G.A.J., Suni Solomon, FLYTASTiK, JaMEEL, Mic-Audio, JazzChronic, SN.i.PA, Awe$ume Trio, Chamber Music, AMUL9, Clean Break, Panic Mane, T-NUTZ, Tony Atwilll & L.A. Jackson, Undeniable, Richelle L. Brown, Mad Marv, Cash Clip, SK All Day, & Tasia Skai.

If that wasn’t enough, we had this distinct honor and pleasure of having three artists (KontraBand Muzik, Richelle L. Brown, & Molly B.) be featured on a promotional compilation presented by OH! Zone Radio Network which syndicates this very show each and every Friday over in Taiwan and abroad with over 10,000 copies of that compilation distributed. And lastly, having the opportunity of taking the HHHS to different places in the Classic City as well as in Atlanta.  But this year wasn’t without it’s a bit of tragedy as we lost significant individuals in the world of urban music (Nate Dogg, Nick Ashford, Amy Winehouse, and Heavy D.) and even in our own backyard (Chimon “Figaro” Davis). But with any kind of setback, it just motivated us to keep, keepin on because that’s what they would want, and we definitely did to the very end of the year. And, now that we are at said point, the question is what will 2012 have in store. Well, it will indeed be a significant year because the WU will be turning 40 so the celebration will be going on year-round. But as far the HHHS, we have some things in store for you in the new year. The first major event will be “The Corner,” a night filled with poetry/spoken word fused with live music all taking place in our Lobby in February, but of course we got the usual suspects (Feminenergy, Nu World Order, and The Collision Course) on top as well. We’re definitely happy with what all we did in 2011, and forever and a day very appreciative for each and every one of you rocking with us throughout. As the last few hours of 2011 ticks away, just know that we will be looking to make 2012 that much grander. Promise!! Til next year, One LOVE!!!

Also, as we mentioned, HHHS-familia Catherine Oshanek of White Cedar Photography has launched an online campaign to raise awareness of bullying and how it can a person whether it happens online, in the classroom, or at the job. Words are a very powerful and can build a person up just as much as it can break them down. If you want to show your support for the I’ve Been Bullied, simply ‘like’ the page and spread the word. Bullying is color blind and does not have a preference. And we think it is safe to say that we have all had our share of bullying at some point in life. And the harsh reality is that it happens across the globe ladies and gents, but we can do our part to raise awareness and hopefully bring it to a halt once and for all. One Love!!
