Loud Fast Rules

So I’ve been slacking in uploading my shows to the blog, I’ll be adding the last few weeks worth over the next couple of days instead of overloading WUOG with too much metal.

This is last night’s edition, it’s another grab bag edition with a bunch of great music across different genres. The set starts off with a couple of tracks from some recent Southern Lord releases. There’s also a brief overview of some of the newer, more experimental metal that’s been coming out on Profound Lore records.

Following up from last week’s show where I closed the set with a few doom metal songs, I decided to do an entire show focusing on the somewhat wide spectrum of music that’s considered doom metal. It’s got everything from traditional, Black Sabbath-y doom to some Southern sludge, post-metal and even a little bit of drone doom. The playlist closes out with several tracks from the Melvins’ Lysol album, it’s definitely the droniest thing the band has released (aside from their collaborations with dark ambient artist Lustmord) and was released right before they signed to a major label and released Houdini. I’m playing a little bit of catch up with my blog, sorry this wasn’t posted earlier. This is the first Loud Fast Rules of the new semester. The playlist starts off with a track off of the Bathory record Blood Fire Death, which is widely considered the first viking metal album. There’s some more traditional black metal, with a few experimental tracks thrown in for good measure. The show ends with some thrashier tracks interspersed with some doom/stoner metal. This week’s edition of Loud Fast Rules focuses on black metal from outside of Scandinavia.

The set starts with a few songs from the Les Legions Noires, a French black metal collective who supposedly was formed in response to the existence of the so called Norwegian Black Metal Inner Circle. While there were at least 20 bands involved in the LLN, only a handful of self released recordings were put out during their period of activity. Of the remaining bands, Mutiilation is the only one still active, though members of all the bands have founded newer projects.

The second half of the set is focused on some more recent USBM releases, including Krallice and Liturgy, and concluding with a track from one of the two new Velvet Cacoon albums (unfortunately the last bit of this track was cut off due to the set going over a few minutes).

This episode features the second edition of Live Fast Rules, featuring local sludge metal band Peachs (featuring members of Coulier, another Athens sludge band). After that, there’s some post-metal/instrumetal, some traditional doom/stoner metal, and of course a little bit of black metal.
