Matter of Jazz – 30 January 2011

Here’s last night’s episode of Matter of Jazz, which opened with Charles Mingus’ ambitiously high-concept “Pithecanthropus Erectus” and featured three Bill Evanses at once (”Blue Monk” from Conversations with Myself), early modal music by Miles’ first great sextet (”Milestones”), a Bartok-influenced collaboration between Stan Getz and Eddie Sauter (”I’m Late, I’m Late”), and an expedition to the borders of free jazz with Archie Shepp, eventually closing with an brief recounting of jazz guitar pioneers ranging back from John McLaughlin to Joe Pass to Django Reinhardt. The track listing is available at http://old.wuog.org/dj/world/index.php?page=printplaylist&show_id=14961, and the episode can be streamed below (fast forward about 7 minutes, though, as the math rock show ran over a bit):

Matter of Jazz – 16 January 2011

The first Matter of Jazz episode of 2011 consisted of a fiery set beginning off with highly orchestrated cuts from the Modern Jazz Quartet (joined by the New York Chamber Symphony) and Stan Getz (arranged by Michel Legrand!) and gradually meandering through a smooth Trane/Elvin ballad, the kinetic fusion of Barry Miles, and the rhythmic inventiveness of Herbie Hancock’s mid-60s quartet, among other diversions. Attached is a show recording (with a little bit of math-rock at the front, fast-forward to 2:18 for the start of the show), and those curious about the set list can find it here: http://old.wuog.org/dj/world/index.php?page=printplaylist&show_id=14793

Again I’ve been lagging behind in posting my Matter of Jazz stuffs due to some technical difficulties/personal ineptitude, but hopefully the anticipation has been building for the recordings of Trey Wright, Kenosha Kid, and others. Tonight’s post features a stern selection of jazz gems; first is the Kenosha Kid album sneak peak/interview from October 18th, during which Dan Nettles and Neal Fountain of Kenosha Kid came in to the WUOG studio to spin a test pressing of their new record, Fahrenheit, and share background and insights on their group and the new album:

also on the docket is the October 25 show, which featured a phone interview with Trey Wright that, though plagued by technical difficulties, yielded some great jazz conversation! here ya go:

there was no Matter of Jazz on November 1 due to UGA’s fall break, but tonight we just got done with blues night featuring Craig Waters & the Section. I’m going to hold off on posting their live performance because we are going to get a sweet cleaned up & edited version of the set to post up here so stay tuned for that! thanks again to Craig Waters & the Section, Dan Nettles, Neal Fountain, and Trey Wright for gracing the Matter of Jazz airwaves over the past few weeks. there will be no live performance next week but tune in anyway as I’ll be spinning jazz classics and favorites from the WUOG archives. Matter of Jazz also will be off the airwaves for the following two Sundays as I will be out of town celebrating the holidays, but be sure to tune in on December 6 as the Jake Mowrer group will be playing Christmas jazz for the final Matter of Jazz/Jazz in the Lobby of the semester!

all apologies, I have been way out of date updating the live recordings on here for the internet world to enjoy. lest your Athens jazz itch go unscratched for too long, here’s the show from September 27th featuring the Trio Amarillo checkeeetout (the trio starts their set at around an hour and six minutes into the recording):::::

last week’s episode with Kenosha Kid will be up ASAP stay tuned! in further news, there’s a great show coming up this Sunday night (10/25) with Baby’s Blue Swing Set featuring Mary Sigalas playing live from 7pm-8pm and an interview with Trey Wright, guitarist for several local jazz groups including Squat and the Trey Wright Trio, during the second hour of the show. after the 25th, I think there will be only three more episodes of Matter of Jazz due to various UGA breaks. You can expect a blues-themed show on November 8th with Craig Waters & the Section from Augusta and also a Christmas-themed episode with the Jake Mowrer Trio/Quartet on what will probably be the final Matter of Jazz of the semester on December 6th.

stay tuned to the blog for the upload of last week’s episode and what to expect from the November 15th show, and stay tuned to the station for Mary Sigalas and Trey Wright this Sunday at 7pm on WUOG 90.5fm Athens and wuog.org/live !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Nettles and Neal Fountain of Kenosha Kid this sunday!

Oct 15 2009 12:06 am

It seems like forever since there’s been any news on the show; there was a temporary hiatus last week due to WUOG’s Seize the Airwaves weekend but we’re back in full form this Sunday as Dan Nettles and Neal Fountain of the fantastic local jazz group Kenosha Kid will be coming in to to talk about their new release Fahrenheit. The Kenosha guys will be bringing in a test pressing of the new record to be released later this month and we will play it in its entirety. Dan’s comments on Fahrenheit:

The music for Fahrenheit was written in the summer of 2007 after being commissioned to compose for a stage production of Fahrenheit 451 in Brunswick, Georgia. The music on the record began there, but quickly outgrew that setting and became a regular part of our set.  The album, which is being released tonight as a digital download and a limited pressing of 500 records (yes, 12” vinyl records!) is a wild ride that I compare to a 40 minute orbit around the earth.  I feel it is truly music of the future.  The record features an amazing 6 piece band and covers an amazing breadth of material that is all thematically related.  Sections are dark, fantastic, aggressive, soulful, and outright hilarious. It is about the struggle to create something organic and spiritual in an increasingly synthetic world”

in further Matter of Jazz news, there is a lot coming down the pipeline for the show; on October 25th, Mary Sigalas will be coming in to play a live set and there will also be an interview with Trey Wright, guitarist for several Athens-based jazz groups including Squat, Grogus, and the Trey Wright Trio. November 1 may be an off week due to UGA’s fall break that weekend, but on November 8th we have Augusta-based Craig Waters & the Section coming in to play a set of their bluesy jazzy rockin tunes. tune in this weekend and every Sunday night from 7-9pm ya!
