Alright here’s the low down on the firstĀ  ever Jazz in the Lobby event THIS SUNDAY (September 13) at 7pm on Matter of Jazz. The group we have coming in is called The Big Fundamentals, they’re a young band from Athens who describes their sound as “gypsy jazz pirate avant-garde skunk funk”. They’ll be playing two sets that will span most of the two hours of the show, split by an intermission during which I will, as usual, spin some jazz records for your listening enjoyment. We’d love to have a studio audience for this first performance, so come by the WUOG lobby in the Tate center from 7-9pm this Sunday or, if you can’t make it there in person, just tune in to 90.5fm Athens or wuog.org/live. Hopefully this will be the start of a stupendous series of superior grooves here at WUOG. Stay tuned to the blog for updates on what you can expect in future weeks; for now, I can tell you that we have the Carlton Owens Trio lined up for the following week (September 20) and lots of great live jazz is in store for the weeks after that!

Hey everyone! Welcome to the brand new Matter of Jazz blog on WUOG! Matter of Jazz is WUOG’s weekly jazz show, airing every Sunday evening from 7pm to 9pm. I’ve just taken over the show this fall and I’m super excited about the possibilities that the upcoming semester holds! One thing that is realllllly coool and new that we’re doing is the first ever WUOG live jazz series! For the rest of the semester, Matter of Jazz will be featuring live performances by local jazz musicians in addition to the usual recorded media, records tapes CDs MP3s and the like. The series starts THIS SUNDAY, September 9th, with a group called The Big Fundamentals who are really great. I’m still ironing out a few logistical details, so expect another post here in the next couple of days with more info about the jazz series and the Big Fundamentals, and tune in this Sunday at 7!!!
