The most recent show with all sorts of folk-influenced Russian rock, folk songs set to rock, and music with folk instruments! Thanks for listening!

I also invite you all to listen this Sunday for a special themed show: Where Russian Music meets America! There will be American bands  with Russian influence, and Russian bands singing in English and Russian music influenced by American rock.

Also, the UGA Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies is hosting a 20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and Revolutions in Eastern Europe Festival. The events will start November 5th (today! now!) at four and go through November 11th.

Folk-rock and rock-folk, check it out, folks!

On the next Soviet Block there’ll be some really cool folk-rock, rock with folk instruments and influence, folk songs set to rock, etc. etc., from the likes of ДДТ, Любэ, and more!

I know you can’t wait for the show, so to keep you tied over till Sunday, check out this pretty offensive, yet hilarious song from Есенин, a mystery drama series about one of Russia’s great poets of the 20th century Sergei Esenin! Esenin’s poem is set to music and performed by this actor from the television series.YouTube Preview Image

Soviet Block was seized by a fan and friend of the show Alex Maksymenko–check out some of his Ukrainian music! You can find the playlist for the show here, but, basically, we heard some very cool tunes from bands like Би-2, Любэ (favorite band of Russia’s Prime Minister Putin), Земфира, Братья Гримм, Океан Ельзи and much more.   If there’s a particular band you find interesting, send me an email, and I’ll make sure to put some more of whoever you like into the show’s rotation. For those who missed it live, here’s a recording of the show! Enjoy!

Next weekend is Alumni Weekend, where former WUOG DJ’s get to step once more inside the DJ booth and spin some records. So, regular Soviet Block programming will continue on Oct. 25 with some folk-rock from our favorite part of the world.

Thanks for tunin’ in…

Sunday’s show on Oct. 4, 2009, featured Russian classical music from composers such as Tchaikovsky, Arensky, Mussorgsky, Stravinsky, Rachmaninoff, Auerbach, and Shostakovich! A big spasibo to Adam Bloodworth, our special guest DJ for the hour!

Here’s the show in its entirety:

Привет всем! [Hi everyone!] This is Soviet Block’s first web post. Soviet Block features opera, classical, contemporary, rock, pop, folk, polka, etc. galore!, from countries formerly part of the Soviet Union. The show debuted on WUOG airwaves on August 30, 2009 and continues to reach audiences far and wide every Sunday from 1-2pm. Unfortunately, we couldn’t record the first show, but I’ve posted the past three shows below.

The upcoming show for October 4 is going to feature Russian classical music, and we’ll have special guest Adam Bloodworth, a UGA senior majoring in Music and minoring in Russian, come on air to share his knowledge of Russian classical music! Stay tuned in to the blog for more updates and recordings of previous shows, and thanks for listening!
