The Ruby Suns, win the highlight of this week’s broadcast recorded live on Monday, January 25, 2010. The Ruby Suns, lead by California native Ryan McPhun, are out of New Zealand and play great Kiwi-tinged Psych-Pop. I was lucky enough to see them in the summer of ‘08 when they were touring behind their last brilliant album, Sea Lion. Their newest single “Cranberry” moves through an Animal Collective-esque intro. and then moves quickly into a Beach Boys inspired Psych-Pop chorus full of images centering on the Sun’s glorious rays and tropical fruit. Lookout for their newest album entitled “Fight Softly,” featuring “Cranberry,” which is out on shelves March 2nd courtesy of Sub-Pop Records. Although the picture below seems to hold 8 members in the band, there remains only 2 members including McPhun himself (He’s the half-naked one with the top-hat and eating fruit). I’ll also attempt to post a video of the show I went to in the Summer of ‘08 in ATL. @ The Variety Playhouse, as well as some pictures from the event on Sundialing’s blog later in the week. Look in the comments tab below to access the entire playlist of the show in a following link. See you next Monday, Sundialers.

Jay Reatard
According to numerous websites and online sources, Jay Reatard died in his sleep this morning at 3:30 AM home in Memphis, TN. Total bummer. Some sources suggest he had flu-like symptoms before his death, according to Jay’s close friends. Sad night for Memphis and the entire garage-rock scene. RIP Jay…you and your music will be missed. I leave you with my favorite song and awesome video by Jay, entitled Blood Visions.” This video of “Blood Visions” was recorded live at the Earl in Atlanta on December 3rd, ‘09.

Welcome back to Sundialing in the year 2010. Hopefully 2010 will be a big year for Sundialing…We want to increase the output of artist interviews who are regularly played on the show. The Spits (pictured below), a weirdo Seattle garage-punk band who are featured as the fifth song of the broadcast, win the pic of the week for their Ramones’ esque riffage on the song “Army Life” from their newest 7″ entitled “Pain.” Hearts go out to the Haitians this week.

The first post of the new year has a great garage/garage-punk/psych-pop playlist, which can be found under the comments tab below this post.
